Description

During this holiday we will see the most beautiful parts of Western Tatras. Mountain peaks covered by powdery snow.  Every day walking in a different area. There will be a bus that will take us every day to the starting point of our trekking on snowshoes and at the end of our walking will again take us back to our hotel. Together with our guide who will be there to assist us with anything we might need we will explore the hidden parts of this beautiful untouched nature.

Itinerary

1.) ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT
Transfer from the airport to the hotel. Our guide will meet us at the airport and help us with our luggage.
2.) FROZEN WATERFALL
15 min transfer will take us to the ski resort where we start our first hike. Before we start,  group leader will give us a quick lesson on how to put on the snowshoes on and how to use them with the pair of poles to move around. It is also necessary to learn few facts about avalanches as well. Starting off the busy ski resort Zverovka you will leave the crowds and noise of the lifts behind and disappear in the pine woods walking gradually up the hill. Touched by quiet Mother Nature, fresh mountain air and followed by nothing just a singing of few birds you will reach a frozen Rohacsky Waterfall – which turns to huge icicle every winter. It is never the same. Icicle changes its colour every day from green, blue, purple.... depending on temperature, snow conditions and amount of water. Coming down from the mountains you will try secret path used only by mountain rescuers.
3.) KVACIANSKA VALLEY, WOODEN WATER MILL, COUNTRY FARM
20 min transfer to village Huty. Kvacianska canyon-type valley is deeply cut into the dolomite and limestone rocks. It creates a popular one-day tourist circuit. Todays walking is easier, you will be hidden in the leafy woods following the old mill road. Kvacianska valley has an instructive path with numerous stops. There used to exist an old road in the valley leading along the bottom and communicated the villages Velke Borove and Huty with the rest of the world. The landmark in the upper part of the valley is called Oblazy - a unique and ancient wooden water mill, which is still kept in very good conditon. You will continue todays snowshoeing to village Kvacany to typical country farmstead with very own beer production. Warm up and learn the way of life in Slovakia while tasting local specialties and home made beer. Approx. 4 hours walking time
4.) SKORUSINA PEAK AND ORAVICE THERMAL POOLS
10 min transfer to starting point. You will start your today expedition behind villages Habovka and Zuberec on the foothills of Skorusinske vrchy.. Walking up the hill leaving villages down bellow you can get beautiful views of Studena “Cold” valley with houses spread around and Rohace Mountains – western part of Tatra Mountains. About an hour hike will get you to the top where you will continue walking on a ridghe following red tourist mark leading to f Skorusina peak (1313 m). There is a huge cross and a view tower at the top. Various social events take place at the top of Skorusina as Sunday summer masses and picnic for people from surrounding villages.  From Skorusina you will walk down the forest to Oravice. Oravice settlement, close to the border with Poland, is famous for its highly mineralized thermal water, which springs in the depth of more than 1 km. Experience pleasant relaxing moments in hot thermal water in the afternoon. 5 hours walking time.
5.) SECRET TRAIL OF PARTISANS AND CULTURAL EVENING
15 min transfer to starting point. Following the footsteps of partisans from the Second World War you will walk through the deep forest walking slightly the hill, steeper at some places but mostly gentle.  After about 2 hours snowshoe hiking you will get to hidden “Partisans hospital” which was built during the war. Today it is an educational trail, so you will learn about extraordinary life of 14 partisans hidden up here in winter 1944. Taking the same trail you will get back down to the valley. It takes just a few minutes tonight to get to Open Air Museum of Orava village where the history of local life is celebrated. There are many historical artefacts worth to see and learn about. But your visit will be timed to also make the most of the cultural evening that museum organises every Wednesday in winter. You will see people dressed in folk costumes, learn some local dances and games and also try honey drink. 4 hours walking time
6.) HIGHLANDERS SETTLEMENTS BOROVE AND THEIR NEVER ENDING HILLS
15 min transfer to village Borove. From the main road to Liptovsky Mikulas we can see picturesque villages of Borove and Huty. Away from civilisation and daily stress mostly older people can be found in those romantic looking villages. Houses are spread over large hilly areas and sometimes there are few kilometres from house to house. Today we will walk up above the highlanders villages where footsteps of wild animals can be easily find. Snow is deeper here and it seem like you are far away from civilisation, as it hasn’t been discovered by crowds of tourists yet. Surprisingly there is little cosy pension at the top of the hill where you will warm up and refresh to get new energy. Approx. 4 hours of walking.
7.) FREE DAY
Feel free to choose your own activity on your last day. Zuberec offers great skiing facilities, there are different slopes from beginners to professional ones, or perhaps you might like to try cross country skiing, dog sledding or snowshoe again. Your group leader will be on hand to make the best plan for your last day in Tatra Mountains.
